Up to now, Mission Impossible aside, all my recommendations on this blog have been older movies. And for good reason, given my age and the breadth of films I have to choose from.
But F1 The Movie changes that. It's so entertaining that not only am I including it here but it is also very close to my all time favourites film list. I LOVED it.
F1 stars Brad Pitt as an aging (it actually suggests he's late fifties, not too far shy of Pitts actual age) racing driver lured back to F1 by an old friend desperate to get that one victory that would allow his team to keep competing. Add the talented but cocky rookie, the take no shit, attractive (and age appropriate) female lead engineer, a behind the scenes villain, and will they wont they last race climax, and you have all the usual ingredients for a splashy summer blockbuster, But everything is done so well and with just enough difference to keep you engaged.
And the races themselves are brilliant. I like F1 but am by no means a huge fan. But the race scenes are filmed so well (Pitt, like Tom Cruise in Top Gun, actually races the cars himself without much CGI) that sweaty palms are guaranteed.
In short, F1 The Movie is an example of how movies should be made, to entertain us. Pitt is still a huge star, the production is lavish and all on the screen, and you will end it with a huge smile on your face.
Enjoy.
