Alfred Hitchcock is one of cinema's truly great directors. He is famous for many films of course, including The 39 Steps, Vertigo, North By Northwest, To Catch a Thief, the list goes on.
But Psycho remains the greatest of all.
Starring Anthony Perkins as Norman and Janet Leigh in the pivotal role of Marion Crane, what begins as a supposed crime thriller descends into something much more horrifying, as the con on the run Crane decides, against her better judgement, to stop at the remote Bates Motel.
Shooting in black and white while colour was already established as the new form of making movies, was a risk that pays off perfectly, adding to the sense of dread throughout. Hitchcock also plays with the idea of black and white as reflections of good and bad, even utilising Cranes choice of bra symbolising her journey from good to bad and back again......
Psycho is cinema at its absolute best, there is literally nothing to criticise here. Perfection.
